We follow the Jigsaw PSHE curriculum which delivers a comprehensive and structured approach to personal development across all year groups. Jigsaw brings together PSHE education, emotional literacy, social skills, and spiritual development in a carefully designed program. It supports children in understanding themselves, building positive relationships, and developing the knowledge and skills they need to thrive as healthy, respectful, and responsible individuals in today’s world.
Each term, the children are introduced to a new Jigsaw puzzle piece - representing one of 6 key ideas they will be exploring in their PSHE lessons that term. These stay the same throughout each year group so key themes can be built on and revisited easily.
A Jigsaw lesson begins in the same way each week - first, with a "Calm Me" moment to pause, catch our breath and emotionally regulate ourselves and then with a reminder of the Jigsaw Class Charter. This charter ensures that everyone understands the importance of respect, privacy and understanding within our PSHE lessons.
At St Martin's CE Primary School, we promote a values-based ethos which nurtures social, emotional and life-skills; promoting self-belief, empathy and resilience. Relationships and Sex and Health Education (RSHE) is lifelong learning about relationships, emotions, looking after ourselves, different families, sex, sexuality and sexual health. We aim for the children in our school to acquire the appropriate knowledge, develop their skills and form positive beliefs, values and attitudes; RSHE has a key part to play in the personal, social, moral and spiritual development of young people.
We follow the ‘Jigsaw’ scheme of work to provide consistency throughout our school, support staff with subject knowledge and to ensure all content is covered at an age appropriate level. Our children are taught by familiar adults who they have a good rapport with, in order to facilitate constructive and supportive discussions about sensitive topics in a safe and secure environment.
Health education aims to give your child the information they need to make good decisions about their own health and wellbeing, to recognise issues in themselves and others, and to seek support as early as possible when issues arise.
We believe that pupils should be given the opportunity to access a curriculum which prepares them for the changes that adolescence brings. We are choosing to provide our pupils with a sensitive, age appropriate curriculum which includes the components of Sex Education.
There are two lessons, taught in Year 6, which parents can opt out of their child attending. We invite parents to a workshop prior to these lessons being delivered and offer you the opportunity to view the content and make an informed decision about whether your child takes part. If you would like access to the RSE content that your child will be learning in the Summer 2 term, please contact Miss House who will be able to give you a login code.
Under the National Curriculum, the basics of Sex Education fall within the science curriculum. The statutory content requires maintained schools to teach children about human development, including puberty, and reproduction. Please see the DfE Science Programme of Study below which includes specific content for each year group.
In Key Stage 1, pupils will:
Be introduced to the process of reproduction and growth in animals. They should be introduced to the concepts of reproduction and growth, but not how reproduction occurs.
Key Stage 2, pupils will:
Be taught about different types of reproduction, including sexual and asexual reproduction in plants and sexual reproduction in animals. Pupils should draw a timeline to indicate stages in the growth and development of humans. They should learn about the changes experienced in puberty.
