Curriculum Intent

At St Martin’s CE Primary Academy our curriculum is designed to provide an ambitious, broad and knowledge rich education that prepares pupils for the next stage of their learning and for life beyond school. We know that excellent teaching underpins the successful delivery of our curriculum, which is why we prioritise our Five Pillars of Excellent Teaching in every classroom, every lesson and every day. Excellent teaching is central to our curriculum design.

Our curriculum is ambitious, inclusive and designed to ensure that every pupil develops the knowledge and skills needed to succeed. Learning is carefully sequenced from pupils’ starting points so that essential knowledge builds securely and pupils are well prepared for each stage of their education.

We place a strong emphasis on English, mathematics, religious education and science. These subjects are taught discretely through clearly structured and progressive programmes of study. Across the wider curriculum, pupils develop secure subject knowledge alongside the communication, reasoning and enquiry skills that enable them to think and work within each discipline.

Teachers have high expectations for all pupils and make purposeful adaptations so that pupils with SEND, those learning English as an additional language and pupils who may face other barriers can access the same ambitious curriculum and achieve well. Regular assessment helps teachers identify gaps, check that important knowledge has been remembered and provide timely support.

Our curriculum reflects the needs, experiences and diversity of our pupils while broadening their understanding of the wider world. It promotes curiosity, confidence and independence and prepares children to flourish in the next stage of their education and beyond.

We work closely with families to support pupils’ learning. Parents and carers are invited to regular curriculum workshops that explain how learning is structured and provide practical ways to support children at home.
