Spelling at St Martin's

At St Martin’s CE Primary School, we believe that secure spelling enables pupils to write accurately, confidently and independently. Our aim is for children to understand how words are constructed and to apply this knowledge purposefully in their writing, rather than simply memorising words for a weekly test.

Our teaching follows Essential Spelling and Word Knowledge, providing a systematic progression from the phonics knowledge established through Essential Letters and Sounds. Pupils explore the connections between sounds and spellings, alongside spelling patterns, morphology, word families and etymology. This helps children understand why words are spelt as they are and equips them with strategies for approaching unfamiliar vocabulary.

Spelling is taught explicitly, revisited regularly and applied within meaningful sentences and independent writing. Teachers model spelling strategies, address misconceptions and use assessment to identify gaps so that additional teaching and practice can be provided promptly. Pupils are also taught to proofread, use appropriate resources and take increasing responsibility for checking and improving their work.

Inclusion

We maintain ambitious expectations for all pupils while adapting teaching and practice for those who require additional support, including pupils with SEND and those learning English as an additional language. Our aim is for every child to develop a rich knowledge of words and become an accurate, curious and increasingly independent speller.
